&#60;p&#62;During the break there will be a performance by the Hicks With Sticks Border Morris Team, with a special 5 minute workshop following to teach the Cuckoo's Nest, a very simple morris dance!

The workshop will teach several dances from the Hick's lively repertoire of traditional and new dances from the Welsh Border region of England. The dances are a folk-aerobic workout with great music and fun dances which involve simple footwork and rhythmic sticking. No long-term commitment is necessary to take part in the workshop, but if participants decide to join the team, the $25 workshop fee applies to the annual team dues. &#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;For friends of the concert series:
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62; We have decided to take a bit of hiatus this fall. Our beloved sound man, Don Moore, is in ICU at the Martinsburg Veterans Hospital, and his trusty side kick, Nick, had heart surgery this summer... so we are taking it a little bit easy for awhile but will be back in late autumn.
For those wishing to drop Don a card, it can be sent to:
Donald L. Moore&#60;br/&#62;
c/o VA Medical Center&#60;br/&#62;
510 Butler Ave&#60;br/&#62;
Martinsburg, WV 25405
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;Keep your eyes peeled for a November house concert the weekend before Thanksgiving, with Dulcemelos from Mexico, and a holiday concert in December. January comes roaring in with pipes and fiddles in weekend events with concerts, workshop and jams... web updates are expected by the end of October... we'll keep you posted.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;Hope to see you on the dance floor or at our next concert event!
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;cheers,
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;Joanie and the SMaD board of directors
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;For fans of Appalachian Music, you might wish to catch part of this weekend's events offered by Shepherd University...

&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;ABOUT THE ARTISTS&#60;/strong&#62;
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;ON THE FRIDAY PROGRAM:&#60;/strong&#62;
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;The week of the Appalachian Writer-in-Residence project draws to a close on Friday night with a reading by the winner of Shepherd's West Virginia Fiction Competition. The literary competition was established by Shepherd University's Department of English to recognize writers and storytellers whose talent and ability in creative writing is distinctive and promising.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;GINNY HAWKER and TRACY SCHWARZ with special guest KAREN COLLINS: Ginny Hawker and Tracy Schwarz met in 1988 when both were on staff at the Ashokan Fiddle and Dance Camp near Woodstock, NY. They soon discovered that, despite their differing childhoods, they shared a deep understanding of and love for the music of the rural south. It was Ginny's birthright and Tracy's lifetime devotion. Ginny Hawker has emerged as one of America's finest traditional singers, bringing a contemporary vitality to the soulful and unvarnished sounds of old-time mountain music. Tracy Schwarz has been a flamekeeper for old-time music since 1962 when he joined the New Lost City Ramblers-- one of the seminal bands responsible for introducing urban audiences to rural southern music in the 1960s and 1970s. Tracy's talent on fiddle, guitar, and Cajun accordian combined with his soulful singing has drawn people worldwide to traditional southern music. For the past 15 years, Ginny and Tracy have appeared in
concerts and festivals throughout the United States, Canada, and England. Their harmonies are representative of the finest American traditional music.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;THE YOUNG NAPOLEONS: There are still some people out there digging deep into Appalachian culture and keeping old traditions alive. What is wonderous is when this is done by those in their twenties. The Young Napoleons is just such a band. Featuring Jefferson County, Since then, they have been thrilled to share their tight, energetic sound with new audiences across the region.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;JOHN LILLY:&#60;/strong&#62;
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;Hosting both the Friday and Saturday concerts once again this year is John Lilly -- musician/ songwriter/ folklorist and editor of West Virginia's Goldenseal magazine. A versatile performer, John sings (and yodels) in the style of Jimmie Rodgers, can play Carter-style with the best of them, and also has a diverse repertoire of traditional tunes that he has learned from old-time musicians across the region.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;&#60;a href=&#34;http://pages.suddenlink.net/johnlillymusic/main.html&#34;&#62;http://pages.suddenlink.net/johnlillymusic/main.html&#60;/a&#62;
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;ON THE SATURDAY PROGRAM:&#60;/strong&#62;
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;ELAINE PURKEY&#60;/strong&#62;
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;She has been called an &#38;quot;Appalachian Janis Joplin&#38;quot; because it doesn't get much realer than Elaine Purkey. Elaine was born and raised in a hollow called Sand Creek Road in the coalfields of West Virginia. Her father played clawhammer banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and guitar among other instruments, and had Elaine singing by the age of five.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;As a child, Elaine performed with her siblings for church services and many community events, and took her music to the picket lines in support of her husband, a union miner. She began writing and singing labor songs in the1980s during the United Mine Worker strikes against the Pittston Coal Company. Elaine became a community organizer in the 1990s, directing the West Virginia Organizing Project, a grassroots organization.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;Of her singing Pete Seeger wrote,&#38;quot;Elaine Purkey's songs carry on the great tradition of Ella May Wiggin of Gastonia, South Carolina, and Aunt Molly Jackson of Harlan County, Kentucky.&#38;quot;
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;Elaine has made appearances at such prestigious events as the Festival of American Folklife, Appalshop's Seedtime on the Cumberland, the Vancouver Folklife Festival, and the Chicago Folk Festival, among others. Elaine can be heard on her CD, &#38;quot;Mountain Music, Mountain Struggle.&#38;quot;
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;ADAM BOOTH&#60;/strong&#62;
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;Born and raised in the hills of West Virginia, Adam Booth tells stories that blend and share generations of Appalachian and Jewish heritage with life lessons and a little bit of mischief. He is a three-time champion of the WV Liars&#38;Atilde;&#38;cent;&#38;Acirc;&#38;#128;&#38;Acirc;&#38;#154; Contest and winner of storytelling contests in three other states. Booth is recipient of the 2011 J.J. Reneaux Mentorship Grant to work with Dovie Thomason. A trained musician, Adam occasionally weaves traditional music and balladry around his stories. He currently serves as president of the West Virginia Storytelling Guild. In October of 2011 he will be featured on the Exchange Place Stage at the National Storytelling Festival.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;PATENT PENDING BLUEGRASS BAND&#60;/strong&#62;
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;The Eastern Panhandle's favorite bluegrass band, Patent Pending has been performing together for more than three decades. They have performed at the Chicago Folk Festival, and bluegrass festivals across the country, sharing the stage with Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys, Hazel Dickens, Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys, Russell Moore and IIIrd Tyme Out, J.D. <title>SMaD News Alert! Traffic Report for tonight's Dance!</title>
		 <link>http://contradancers.com/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/smadMailingList/20110702074833/</link>
		 <description>
&#60;p&#62;Greetings SMaD friends:
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;The Antietam Battlefield National Park is having their annual July 4 celebration at the park tonight and expects 30,000 visitors. Dancers coming from DC and Baltimore should travel through Harpers Ferry rather than Boonsboro!

&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;Tonight's dance features Susan Taylor calling to the band Montage with Rachel Bell on flute and accordion, Jane Knoeck on piano and accordion, and Tom Santararsiero on guitar, mandolin, and banjo. There will be a beginner's workshop at 7:30PM and the dance starts at 8PM. Potluck Snacks at the break. Please wear soft soled shoes to protect our floor. More information can be found at the website at smad.us, or by calling Becky Lidgerding at (304) 876-2169.
&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;About the Band:&#60;br/&#62;
A contra dance band from Western New York and Pennsylvania, Montage plays an innovative mix of European-based music, rooted in tradition and strongly influenced by modern styles. This trio weaves together everything from swing to Parisian to rootsy Breton folk styles. Montage is in demand as a contradance band and regularly plays in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Canada. Another focus of the band is authentic music for French bourree and other European dance styles, in collaboration with dancers Werner Ceusters and Maria Capolupo.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;Jane Knoeck: Jane's musical beginnings were a mix of classical piano and voice studies. Sometime in the 80's she discovered instrumental folk music and contra dancing. Dance bands soon followed, and she has been playing piano and accordion with a variety of groups ever since, weaving a wide variety of musical influences into her style. Besides Montage, she plays with the Groovemongers and with the trio Riverbend. In addition to contra dance, she also enjoys playing for English and Scottish country dancing.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;Rachel Bell: Rachel Bell grew up playing piano and exploring a wide range of folk instruments. Now focusing on accordion and wooden flute, she enjoys a busy gig schedule playing concerts and contra dances with Montage, Tunescape, and the Andrew and Noah VanNorstrand Band. She is admittedly addicted to composing and has a particular love for Quebecois, Scandinavian, and French music.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;Tom Santarsiero: Influenced by the musical styles of New England, Southern Appalachia, and French Canada, Tom has developed an eclectic approach to playing mandolin, guitar, banjo and foot percussion with Montage and Riverbend.

		 <title>SMaD News Alert! April Fools Concert, April 2 dance...</title>
		 <link>http://contradancers.com/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/smadMailingList/20110330082933/</link>
		 <description>
&#60;p&#62;Has the retreat of Spring weather got you down... perk up your spirits with one of these events!
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;Fools, Heroes, Deception, Trickery and Magic in store at April Fools &#38;quot;British Pub Night&#38;quot; Concert
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;Shepherdstown, WV: Shepherdstown Music &#38;amp; Dance International Concert Series
Friday, April 1: British Pub Night with Brian Peters
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;Join British songster Brian Peters as he presents a lively evening of songs from his extensive repertoire to reflect the occasion; songs of foolery, trickery, magic and other devilment... as well as a stunning selection of instrumental tunes on the melodeon and concertina from his home in the north of England. Hicks with Sticks Morris will be on hand with beverages and light snacks to complement program... and there might be an impromptu English Ceilidh dance to follow. Come out for a rare evening of old English fun at the Shepherdstown Train Station at 8PM! Admission is $15 adults, $12 seniors, $10 SMD members.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;Cancelled because of a volcano last April, we are not taking any chances this year and are holding this concert on April Fools Day! Brian has chosen a repertoire of songs from his extensive repertoire to reflect the occasion, songs of foolery, trickery, magic and other devilment... as well as a stunning selection of instrumental tunes on the melodeon and concertina from his home in the north of England.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62; Brian Peters is a performer of traditional folk music who combines a high level of skill on three different instruments with a great voice and an energetic stage presence. He's a leading English squeezebox player, doubling on melodeon (button accordion) and anglo-concertina, a fine guitarist well-versed in open tunings, and a passionate singer who can convey drama or emotion, while his carefully-constructed accompaniments blend adventure and sophistication. Described as &#38;quot;One of British folk music's finest ambassadors&#38;quot;, Brian started out in the folk clubs of England and has taken his performances to stages all over the world, touring regularly in Europe and America, and always retaining a deep commitment to the musical traditions of his native country.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;Brian believes strongly in the power and relevance of the old songs and bases his sets around them. In particular he specializes in the ancient story songs known as Child Ballads, and has produced a CD and a special live presentation based around them. &#38;quot;Brian Peters plunges deep into the ancient songs, finds their power, mystery, evil, drollery and courage, and brings them to us fresh&#38;quot;, declared one American writer. He's no diehard, though, spicing his regular show with contemporary songs, material of his own and occasional bursts of wild eclecticism; his stage set achieves startling variety, without ever betraying his traditional roots.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;On the instrumental side, Brian has been a mover in the creation of a distinct identity for Northern English dance music, researching, playing and teaching rare tunes from centuries-old manuscripts, as well as composing many tunes in traditional style. He's also become known for daring forays into ragtime, blues and rock'n'roll on his squeezeboxes. Brian presents his material with warmth and unforced humour to appeal to the casual listener as well as the committed folk fan.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;The concert is a special event put on by Shepherdstown Music &#38;amp; Dance to benefit the May Celebration, which will take place on Saturay, May 7. For more information call Joanie at (304) 263-2531 or email &#60;a href=&#34;mailto:&#38;#117;&#38;#112;&#38;#100;&#38;#x66;&#38;#64;&#38;#x65;&#38;#97;&#38;#x72;&#38;#x74;&#38;#x68;&#38;#108;&#38;#105;&#38;#110;&#38;#x6B;&#38;#46;&#38;#x6E;&#38;#x65;&#38;#116;&#34;&#62;&#38;#117;&#38;#112;&#38;#100;&#38;#x66;&#38;#64;&#38;#x65;&#38;#97;&#38;#x72;&#38;#x74;&#38;#x68;&#38;#108;&#38;#105;&#38;#110;&#38;#x6B;&#38;#46;&#38;#x6E;&#38;#x65;&#38;#116;&#60;/a&#62;, on the web at &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.smad.us/&#34;&#62;www.smad.us&#60;/a&#62; .

&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;Friday, April 1 at 8:30PM Back by popular demand... British Pub Night with Brian Peters!
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62; Cancelled because of a volcano last April, we are not taking any chances this year and are holding this concert on April Fools Day! Brian has chosen a repertoire of songs from his extensive repertoire to reflect the occasion, songs of foolery, trickery, magic and other devilment... as well as a stunning selection of instrumental tunes on the melodeon and concertina from his home in the north of England. Hicks with Sticks will be on hand with beverages and light snacks to complement program... and there's a good chance there will be an impromptu English Ceilidh dance to follow. Come out for a rare evening of old English fun at the Shepherdstown Train Station!
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62; Brian Peters is a performer of traditional folk music who combines a high level of skill on three different instruments with a great voice and an energetic stage presence. He's a leading English squeezebox player, doubling on melodeon (button accordion) and anglo concertina, a fine guitarist well-versed in open tunings, and a passionate singer who can convey drama or emotion, while his carefully-constructed accompaniments blend adventure and sophistication.

&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;And...so new it's not even on the web page yet (but will be soon) ...
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62;We hope to see you at one of these events coming up soon!

		 <description>
&#60;p&#62;Dear SMaD Members and friends:

&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62; We have decided to cancel the daytime dance events that were part of the Upper Potomac Appalachian Music &#38;amp; Dance Weekend because of low advance registration.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62; The Concert, Evening Dance and all the instrumental workshops are still happening and enhanced due to more staffing.
&#60;/p&#62;&#60;p&#62; See you at an evening event we hope!
