THANK YOU
Thank you all very much for coming. We hope that you had a wonderful time, and that you will consider coming again next year, when our callers will be Will Mentor and Beth Molaro, and bands will be Atlantic Crossing, The Latter Day Lizards, and London Porter. We will alert you by email when registration opens. Please keep in mind that we assign cabins based upon when you sign up, so if you really liked the Lodge or the Clubhouse or some other cabin this year, and hope to be in that same cabin in 2012, sign up early and make sure we know about your cabin preferences.

EVALUATION
Please go to our website ( http://footfalldance.com ) and fill out an evaluation form.

Here's some additional information related to Question 10a. on the online Evaluation form:
Any of you who danced in the Playhouse (which should include nearly everyone) certainly noticed that the Playhouse floor is not a good floor for turning – tough for contras, downright terrible for waltz or hambo, marginally okay for English and squares. The floor is level, but composed of sheets of rough plywood with a coat of paint.
Timber Ridge camp is a sleep-over children's camp from June to late August, and the campers use the floor of the Playhouse for building and painting sets, among other things. For performances, benches are dragged in and over the floor. For these reasons and more, installing a permanent high quality dance floor in the Playhouse is not a good solution, as it would almost certainly suffer damage and therefore would need maintenance and/or repair.
But there is a solution. Touring professional dance companies bring temporary dance floors with them, which they install before each performance to protect their dancers from injury and ensure a consistent surface. Rosco makes a temporary dance floor with a "medium fast" surface, called Adagio Tour. It comes in rolls 63" wide, and up to 100 feet long. FootFall, in cooperation with the other dance organizers who use Timber Ridge, would like to raise approximately $5000 with which to purchase 4 rolls of Adagio Tour ($1200 per roll). That should allow complete coverage of the floor in the Playhouse. Installation is very simple – the flooring is rolled out into place over the existing plywood and allowed to "sit" and flatten for 24 hours. The seams between rolls are butted tightly together and taped down their length. After use, the tape is removed, the floor is rolled up, and the rolls are stored until their next use. Timber Ridge has offered to store the flooring safely o
n the premises. The floor is extremely durable and is intended to last through years of installation/removal cycles. Rosco has offered to send us a small sample (big enough to turn on) and we hope to tape a video demonstration so you can see the product for yourself. We will send you a link by email when the video is ready.
There were 240 of us at FootFall this year. If each person who came to FootFall this year contributed only $10, that would be half of what we need. FootFall also hopes that the organizers of Almost Heaven, CDSS Family Week, International Dance, and Scottish will join in raising enough money to improve the Playhouse dance floor, which will be to everyone's benefit.

A duck walked into a pharmacy, found a tube of Chapstick, and approached a clerk. "Do you want to pay for that?" the clerk asked. "No," said the duck. "Just put it on my bill."

Hope to see you next year!

What to pack: Dance duds and dance shoes; non-dance clothing and shoes including one long-sleeve top (sometimes mornings are chilly); a flashlight (we have small pocket flashlights for $2 if you forget yours); rain gear (we have a supply of lightweight plastic ponchos for $1); sheets, pillow, and blankets or sleeping bag; a light jacket (we have beautiful fleece jackets for $20); shampoo, soap, other toiletries such as shaving equipment and deodorant; towels, a bath mat if you have one, and a bathrobe (all cabins have showers); swim suit (only the late night swims are "suits optional") and beach towels, pool shoes, sandals, or flip-flops; sunscreen and/or a hat; hangers; a small (quiet) alarm clock; a bedside light; extra socks; a lawn chair if there's room in the car; pocket money or your checkbook.

Special food if you have dietary restrictions (gluten intolerance for instance). Beverages if you want something other than coffee, tea, juice, milk, or water. (Please mark everything with your name or initials). Treats to share at the Friday night or Saturday night post-dance party are especially welcome. Friday night treats should go in the camper refrigerator in the Dining Hall. Saturday night treats can go in the coolers in the Canteen upon your arrival.

The Camp has not had the very heavy rain we have experienced in the Greater Washington area the last few days. The weekend prediction, as of Wednesday night, is for occasional showers, especially Friday, but "partly cloudy with a stray thunderstorm" on Saturday (precipitation chance 30%) and " scattered thunderstorms" on Sunday. Highs in the 75-80 range and cool in the evening. The roads leading to the Camp are paved and well maintained.

Most of the Committee will be at Timber Ridge starting Thursday, but we will check email. Cell phone coverage is spotty, so an email is the best way to reach us.

The Timber Ridge office number is 304-856-2630, and there is an answering machine which will be checked frequently.

Please look at our website for directions. Our big beautiful bright yellow signs will be at every important intersection, but if you are going to be driving after dark, particularly if you have not been to Timber Ridge before, and/or if you are going to be driving alone, print the directions below in GREAT BIG TYPE, so you can read them easily – even by dashboard light. Here are landmarks and elapsed mileage readings measured from the intersection of Routes 50 and 37 (all mileages are approximate):

10.8 miles on Route 50 to the Gore Volunteer Fire Station. This is a large dark green and tan cinder block building on your right, very well lit at night. As you pass the fire station, move into the left hand lane.

Continue just 0.5 miles on Route 50 and then turn LEFT onto Route 259.

Travel 4.2 miles on Route 259 – you'll see the West Virginia state line sign.

Continue 0.5 miles on Route 259. As you pass the Case Tractor sign, notice the large white buildings on your right and slow down so you can make a sharp RIGHT turn onto Christian Church Road.

Follow Christian Church Road for 1.4 miles – you will pass between the red brick church (on the right) and a red brick church office building (on the left).

Continue just 0.2 miles on Christian Church Road. Make a LEFT turn onto Hooks Mill Road.

Travel 1.4 miles on Hooks Mill Road (mostly downhill), until you see a "Dead End" sign and the pavement ends. Turn LEFT onto a gravel road.

0.2 miles uphill on the gravel road. At the fork, bear RIGHT (you'll see a Timber Ridge sign), and continue 0.3 miles to the gate.

Follow the yellow signs to the bottom of the hill, curve left along the camp's main road to the purple A-Frame. (If you arrive after 8:30, registration may have been moved to the Dining Hall, which is halfway down the hill – you'll see a small parking lot on your left. Pull in, and walk around the uphill side of the Dining Hall to find the entrance.)

If you need an immediate pit stop before checking in, the small building just past the A-Frame (on the same side of the road) has bathroom facilities.

Gas is about a dollar more expensive than it was a year ago. The Sheetz station at the intersection of Routes 66 and 15 is competitive. If you're using the Greenway to15 to 7 route from the DC area (which we strongly recommend), there are several gas stations EAST of Winchester – before you get to the 81/37 loop around Winchester. When we drove out Sunday, the Gas Mart, located about 5 miles west of the Route 50/Route 37 intersection, was $3.439. Many Winchester stations were $3.459.

If you are taking the Greenway to 15 to 7 route, watch for the sign to the 81 North ramp – the ramp is just after the entrance to a fairly large shopping center, and nor particularly well marked. Once on 81, you get off at the very first exit. We'll try to have our big yellow signs there, to give you a little advance warning.

If you are going to miss dinner at the Camp because of work or traffic or whatever, we will have sandwich makings, but here are several options within 20 minutes or so of Timber Ridge:

I-66 Exit 6: Starbucks, Quiznos, Fosters Grille, Tropical Smoothie Café, China City Buffet, Checkers, Subway, Ledo Pizza, Applebee's

I-81 Exit 307: Pizza Hut, Domino's Pizza, Brothers Pizzeria, Z & Z Chinese Buffet, Lily Garden, Best Wok, High Point, Arbys, McDonalds, Burger King

US 50 just off US 37: McDonald's (just E), Subway, Applebee's, Sonic, IHOP

See you Friday!!

FootFall FootNotes #1

FootFall is just two weeks away (Hooray!!) Here are some FootNotes:

1. Schedule: You will receive a final schedule in your registration packet. If you want to participate in the Dutch Crossing workshop, you'll find a sign-up sheet in the Dining Hall. The dance requires that each set contain 16 dancers, so signing up is important.
2. Cabins: Cabins do not contain small trash cans (there are large trash drums outside). Your registration packet will include a plastic bag (made from recycled milk jugs), which can be draped over a doorknob or hook and used for trash until Sunday (the bag may also be used to pack your wet towels and/or bathing suit for the trip home). Bring your own hangers, soap products, pillows, sheets/blankets or sleeping bags, and towels. Consider bringing a small "bedside" mat or rug to wipe your feet before getting into bed, and a fan, and a lamp or flashlight.
3. Pool: Stan Fowler will be our extra lifeguard, which means that the pool will be open all day except at meals and during the evening dances. The pool will be open for a late night swim after both the Friday night and Saturday night dances - but please come to the snack first, so Stan can get a headcount. The pool will also be open for half an hour after the last dance - from 3:15 to 3:45 on Sunday afternoon - so that you can cool off before you start home. You MUST be out of the pool by 3:45, and out of your cabins by 4:00.
4. Food: There's a campers' refrigerator in the Dining Hall for special food items. Please mark them with your name or initials. We have posted the menu on the website so you can look it over in advance. The Friday late night snack will be in the Dining Hall, and the Saturday night snack will be in the Playhouse. If you'd like to bring any extra goodies or beverages to share during the late night snacks (and we welcome contributions!), please do so. If you bring something for each late night snack, there's the camper's refrigerator in the Dining Hall, and a refrigerator in the Playhouse/Canteen kitchen.
5. Registration: The registration office will be in the purple A-frame on Friday afternoon and evening. If you arrive after dark, there will be lighted signs and purple lights. Last year most people had arrived by 8:30, so between 8:30 and 9 we will move registration materials to the Dining Hall. If you get stuck in traffic and miss dinner, we will have sandwich makings, yogurt, and chocolate in a cooler at the registration office. The Timber Ridge office number is 304-856-2630, and there is an answering machine which will be checked frequently. Call to let us know if you will be late, or if you will not be arriving until Saturday morning, so we don't worry.
6. Cell phones: Most cell phones do not work in the camp itself (although some people get spotty reception at the top of the hill or along the gravel road leading to Hook Mill Road). Most cell phones do work along Route 50 and spottily on 259.
7. Joke Show: If you'd like to submit a duck joke for the Saturday night break, we'll have a box, with 5 x 8 cards and pens, or print out your favorite in advance and bring it with you.
8. Shape Note Sing. Are you planning on coming to the Sunday morning Shape Note Sing? Would you be comfortable providing pitches (with or without a pitchpipe)? The leaders who came last year are unable to attend, and we're hoping we don't have to cancel this workshop. Please let us know if you can help.

Less than four more weeks to FootFall! Dancers are coming from Virginia, Maryland, DC, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Florida, New York, Ohio, California, North Carolina, Georgia, Michigan, New Jersey, Delaware, Indiana, and Massachusetts. Wow!

We are reaching capacity, and we wanted to alert you that if you put off registration much longer, you might find yourself on a wait list. We are currently gender-balanced, and therefore we can accept registrations from single men, single women, and couples, but there are only about 30 spaces left. In addition, we'd like to remind you that there's an additional $25 fee for registrations received on-line after midnight Friday, August 19th, or postmarked August 20th or later. It's $215 for adults today and all this week, but it'll be $240 next Saturday morning. So dig out that registration form that you've had on the desk since June, find your checkbook, an envelope, and a stamp and get it in the mail. Or do it the easy way - go directly to the website - http://footfalldance.com - and sign up using PayPal, or print the form from the Web site & mail it with your check (payable to FootFall).

If you had intended to apply for a sweeper or kitchen fellowship, we filled those slots quite some time ago. However it is always possible we will need an alternate. If you wish to be considered as an alternate, you must sign up at the regular rate and let us know that you would be available. If we need you to work as a substitute, we will reimburse you for the difference between the regular rate and the fellowship rate.

Take a look at the schedule - we have fabulous music - Perpetual e-Motion and Nor'easter playing contras and squares, of course, but lots of other workshops that you don't want to miss - English, Dutch Crossing and Clogging, Snoa, Waltz and Hambo - even a chance to find a fossil or learn to juggle. Seth Tepfer and Diane Silver, Melissa Running, Gaye Fifer and Wayne Albright, Ted Hodapp and Lynn Baumeister, Kim Forry and Jan Scopel. Don't wait. Register soon!

Shortly I will be sending each of you a confirmation message; please, when you get it, check it carefully to be sure I have all of your information correct, and please fill in any information I'm missing for you, and let me know the results.

If any of the committee are NOT going to be able to attend (other than Betty, whom I already know has another commitment), please let me know as soon as you know.

If anyone has a family member (14 or older) or significant partner who would like to attend but is not already part of the committee or staff, they may register for the reduced rate of $120; because we are approaching capacity & trying to maintain gender balance, please let me know ASAP the # & gender of any such registrants. Jamie: Are Betsy & Hannah both coming this year (I already have them in the file, assuming yes)?

If any of you are flying, rather than driving, to FootFall & would like the option of having us get you a set of linens (sheets, pillow, blanket & towel) from the camp, please let me know soon so I can tell the camp how many we'll need. Also, if you'd need a ride from an airport, let me know ASAP which airport & what arrival & departure times, so I can help arrange a ride.

Dear Dancer,
We thought we'd remind you, now that spring has sprung, that it's time to be thinking about Fall - the fifth annual FootFall Dance Weekend, September 9-11, 2011, that is. Fabulous music, exhilarating callers, enthusiastic dancers, and entertaining workshops, at Timber Ridge Camp, in High View, West Virginia. We have booked two wonderful callers - Seth Tepfer & Diane Silver - so you know there will be quirky, put-your-track-shoes-on contras and some seriously wicked rollicking.

This year FootFall features three high-energy bands:
Perpetual E-Motion: On the cusp between traditional and electronic music, this innovative and exhilarating two-man orchestra creates layers of sound that will entice you onto the dance floor. Ed Howe on electronic fiddle and John Cote' on acoustic electric guitar use a variety of state-of-the-art music synthesis devices to layer exotic and lush sounds into a a driving and pulsating sound that will captivate and thrill you. Listen to them at http://www.perpetuale-motion.com/music.html
Nor'easter: Cedar Stanistreet (fiddle), Julie Vallimont (keyboard), and Max Newman (mandolin and guitar) will blow you away. Spirited and compelling, with rich rhythmic patterns and counterpoint, their dynamic enthusiasm is irresistible. Listen to them at http://www.noreasterband.com/music
Green Light Karma: All three band members - David Knight on fiddle, Andrew Marcus on accordion, and Dave Wiesler on piano and guitar - are not only superbly accomplished musicians, but also prolific tunesmiths. Their repertoire is refreshingly different - charming, quirky, melodious.

Gaye Fifer and Wayne Albright will present their always delightful and popular waltz tutorials. Ted Hodapp and Lynn Baumeister will teach workshops in snoa and hambo. Melissa Running will lead three English Country Dance workshops, plus a Saturday early-evening ECD session - from 7:30 to 9. Clogging and foot-percussion woprkshops with Jan Scopel and Kim Forry. A visit to the fossil pit, hosted by John Merck. The ever-popular and informative FootSore workshop by camp doctor Susan Schmitt. Singing workshops Saturday and Sunday morning. Late night post-dance swims, and a late-night techno-contra after the Saturday evening contra.

Cost per person is $215, or $160 for ages 14-25. If you are interested in working as a FootFellow - either helping in the dining hall or as a sweeper, please email us and let us know. FootFellows pay only $120. Check our website, http://FootFallDance.com for more details. On-line registration (by PayPal) is available now. We'd love to see you in September!

Ed Howe on electronic fiddle and John Coté on acoustic electric guitar use a variety of state-of-the-art music synthesis devices to layer exotic and lush sounds into a a driving and pulsating sound that will captivate and thrill you.
Well. Wow. I don't know what the Weather Committee sacrificed, nor to whom, but I sure hope they can repeat themselves next year.

LOST & FOUND:
If someone left behind something we could trace to a particular cabin, then Betty Wells has separately emailed everyone assigned to that cabin about that item.

Found in the Dining Hall refrigerator:
1 extremely ripe cantaloupe without a label. We couldn't figure out how we'd mail it back to its owner, so we took it home. It was delicious; thank you.

Found in the Dining Hall
Dark blue Quality Outerwear down jacket, with maroon lining, both snap & zipper front closure, size M (39-41)

Found in the Gym
Brown sunglasses
White ribbed washcloth
Speedo white swimming goggles
Woman's grey hoodie with blue and white stripes on the sleeves - Eddie Bauer Petite M
Man's maroon cotton knit long-sleeved Henley shirt, Carhartt Large
Man's green/blue/white plaid long-sleeved flannel shirt, size Large
Only 1 black nylon stretch footie sock with padding for ball of foot - do you have the other?

Found in Cabin 5
Grey and black Champion brand shorts, size M

Found in Cabin 11/12
Navy sweat pants, Russell brand, L

Lost - One of Elvie Miller's beautiful deep blue/purple hand woven scarves did not turn up when Elvie packed up her inventory. Please email us if you have any information about it. The amount of money left for the bands' CDs and the FootFall flashlights & ponchos did not quite align with the number taken; if you know you picked up something and meant to pay for it later but then forgot, it's not too late to correct that oversight.

THANKYOUs

Special thanks to Doug Wagner, our floor manager, who does an outstanding job so well that nobody notices. Doug comes to camp Thursday and spends the entire evening cleaning the Gym floor so that it is ready for Friday night. He organizes a team of volunteer Floor Fellows to ensure that the floors are ready for use every morning and cleaned throughout the day, and that the water jugs (in two different locations) are monitored and refilled. You would notice if he didn't do all that work.

Thanks to the Food Fellows, who make it possible to use real plates and tableware. And to Robert Cox, whose effective and melodious gong playing turned busing the tables into a symphony.

Thanks also to the dancers who picked people up at airports and/or shared rides - and thanks to Jerry Blum, who kept track of the requests and put people in touch with one another by email or phone. Please consider adding your name to the "I can give a ride" list next year. Or maybe we should include "I'd like to carpool" as a choice on the registration form?

Please fill in and mail the evaluation form that we included with your packet, or go online and fill it in. We read them all, and we've gotten wonderful suggestions every single year.

All of us on the FootBoard would like to thank all of you for coming to FootFall this year. We hope that you had such a good time that you will spread the word in your dance community - your good opinion and recommendation is more effective than any flyer. We'll let you know, by email, when registration for 2011 opens.

Jerry Blum, Registrar
Robert Cox, Kitchen Koordinator
Mike Fallon, Check-in Chief
Jean McAulay, Treasurer
Aimee Steussy, Hospitality Honchette

FootNotes 2

What to pack: Dance duds and dance shoes; non-dance clothing and shoes including one long-sleeve top (sometimes mornings are chilly); a flashlight (we have small pocket flashlights for $2 if you forget yours); rain gear (we have a supply of lightweight plastic ponchos for $1); sheets, pillow, and blankets or sleeping bag; a light jacket (we have beautiful fleece jackets for $25); shampoo, soap, other toiletries such as shaving equipment and deodorant; towels, a bath mat if you have one, and a bathrobe (all cabins have showers); swim suit (only the late-night swims are "suits optional") and beach towels, pool shoes, sandals, or flip-flops; sunscreen and/or a hat; hangers; a small (quiet) alarm clock; a bedside light; extra socks; a lawn chair if there's room in the car; pocket money or your checkbook.

Special food if you have dietary restrictions (gluten intolerance for instance). Beverages if you want something other than coffee, tea, juice, milk, or water. Treats to share at the Friday night or Saturday night post-dance party would be especially welcome. (Please mark everything with your name or initials). Friday night treats can go into the camper refrigerator in the Dining Hall, and Saturday night treats can go into the coolers in the Canteen upon your arrival.

The weather mavens are predicting sunshine, with highs in the low 80s and cool, clear evenings. Sounds perfect! Be sure to thank our weather committee<wink>.

Most of the Committee will be at Timber Ridge starting Thursday, but we will check email. Cell phone coverage is spotty, so an email is the best way to reach us. 304-856-2630 is the Timber Ridge camp land line, and it has an answering machine.

Please look at our website for directions. Our big beautiful bright yellow signs will be at every important intersection, but if you are going to be driving after dark, particularly if you have not been to Timber Ridge before, and/or if you are going to be driving alone, print the directions below in GREAT BIG TYPE, so you can read them easily - even by dashboard light.

Travel 4.2 miles on Route 259 - you'll see the West Virginia state line sign.

Continue 0.5 miles on Route 259. As you pass the Case Tractor sign, notice the large white buildings on your right and slow down so you can make a sharp RIGHT turn onto Christian Church Road.

Follow Christian Church Road for 1.4 miles - you will pass between the red brick church (on the right) and a red brick church office building (on the left).

A GPS may call this CR 23/4 (then, again, it may not).

(If you arrive after 8:30, registration may have been moved to the Dining Hall, which is halfway down the hill - you'll see a small parking lot on your left. Pull in, and walk around the uphill side of the Dining Hall to find the entrance.)

If you need an immediate pit stop before checking in, the small dark blue building just past the A-Frame (on the same side of the road) has bathroom facilities, or there are bathrooms in a small building on the downhill side of the dining hall.

Gas is only about ten cents more expensive than it was a year ago. The Sheetz station ~0.5mi south on US15 from Exit 40 from Interstate 66 and 15 is often competitive. If you're using the Greenway to15 to 7 route from the DC area (which we strongly recommend), there are several gas stations EAST of Winchester - before you get to the 81/37 loop around Winchester. When we drove out Sunday, the Gas Mart, located about 5 miles west of the Route 50/Route 37 intersection, was $2.439. Many stations just south of Winchester on I-81were $2.459.

If you are taking the Greenway to 15 to 7 route, watch for the sign to the 81 North ramp - the ramp is just after the entrance to a fairly large shopping center, and not particularly well marked.
