Scandinavian Fiddle & Dance Weekend
January 23-25 in Shepherdstown
Dear friends, fiddlers, dancers, and dance musicians:
I want to let you know about our upcoming Scandinavian Fiddle and Dance weekend January 23-25 in Shepherdstown. This program has something for all of you - a fantastic concert, fiddle workshop and dance band workshops, dance workshops, a contra dance with breaks for all of the fantastic Scandinavian couple dances that will be taught during the afternoon, an open band opportunity and a chance to be together for fun, conviviality and the things we cherish on a mid-winter weekend in the heart of Shepherdstown.
Since your interests are varied I've included three short paragraphs below to describe each of the programs and hope that you will join us for one or more parts of this weekend. The program has undergone some recent schedule changes, so I apologize if I've sent this to you more than once. A weekend brochure and a concert poster are attached; please share them with friends and students.
I'll look forward to seeing you there!
All the best,
Joanie

Friday, January 23 Scandinavian Fiddle Magic Concert
In Scandinavia the fiddle is quite literally the stuff of legend. The wild landscape of air, rock, forest and water is reflected with crystal clarity in the the bleak majesty of the music, and tales abound of the supernatural link between the fiddler and the twilight world of devils, sprites and trolls. This concert combines some of the finest Scandinavian musicians, Andrea Hoag on fiddle, Loretta Kelley on the hardanger fiddle, and Charlie Pilzer on bass. The trio were nominated for a Grammy Award with their recording, Hambo in the Snow in 2006. They will be joined by special guests, Bruce Sagan on nykelharpa and fiddle, fiddler Julia Borland-Ferneborg and Gammaldans master and fiddler Goran Olssen in an evening of haunting melodies and harmonies from the frozen North.
